Hormonal acne can come at any age but the term is most commonly used to describe adult acne. Most adult acne occurs on the chin and jaw line and can pop up out of nowhere. A trip to the dermatologist is always recommended for sudden skin changes but if you are pretty sure the culprit is hormones, there are some treatments you can try at home first.
One of the best OTC treatments is Benzoyl Peroxide. Yep, that old teenage acne cream still works for adults. Benzoyl Peroxide works by releasing oxygen into the pores, killing the acne causing bacteria. My favorite is Clean & Clear Persa- Gel 10 Acne Treatment. It can be paired with salicylic acid and can be applied several times per day. Now, if you have never used benzoyl products, there are a few things you need to know:
- It can dry out your skin, causing peeling and redness. When this happens you may want to alternate with a salicylic acid lotion.
- It will bleach out clothing, sheets and any other fabric your skin touches. Wash your hands thoroughly and use old sheets and towels – you can also buy benzoyl peroxide resistant sheets.
- It comes in formulations from 2.5% to 10%. Start out on the low end until you an see how your skin tolerates it.
You should start to see results in a few days. You will have to keep using it until your hormones settle – so maybe forever. The Persa Gel works fine under makeup and doesn’t cause any major discomfort. Another product it pairs well with is Kiehl’s Acne Blemish Control Daily Skin-Clearing Treatment, $30. It is a combo of salicylic acid and lipo hydroxy acids that work to reduce inflammation and remove dead skin.
