Inside the Fall Beauty Trends show at Nordstrom Montgomery Mall

The Fall Beauty Trend Show took place this weekend at Nordstrom Montgomery Mall. More than 150 ladies got up early for the annual show to learn about the latest trends, get makeovers from national brand artists and win free stuff. The Fall Beauty Trend Show happens at select Nordstrom stores across the country and is three hours of beautymania.

NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in Dione and NARS Velvet Shadow Stick in Goddess
NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in Dione and NARS Velvet Shadow Stick in Goddess

After the runway show is over, guests can visit the beauty department and get advice and makeovers from national makeup artists. I b-lined it over to NARS to get my eyes done. I was getting tired of my regulars, MAC, Urban Decay and L’Oreal and wanted something different. I love that pewter color that many of the Rea; Housewives of Orange County wear in their interviews so the artist hooked me up with NARS’ Dual Intensity in “Dione”. First she used NARS Velvet Shadow Stick in “Goddess” all over my lid and brow. She said I could wear it alone or as an eye primer. I loved it so I bought it. Next she applied Dione on my lid. She used “Portobello 1” in my crease and blended it through. Portobello is a matte and comes in a duo. It is a mushroomy beige and I have so many colors like that so I didn’t buy it. She finished off my look with black eyeliner and NARS lengthening mascara.

You may still be available to attend a beauty trends show at your local store. Just go to and look up the events at your store or call your local store’s beauty department.

DIY makeup for Girls Night Out

Looking for something new to do for Girl’s Night Out? How about making your own makeup? It may seem like an arduous task, buying all the ingredients and searching Pinterest for recipes. But if you live in the Maryland/DC area, you  are in luck! I recently attended a “make and take event” put on by the founders of Dear Baby Products,  a local company that makes handmade pregnancy and baby safe bath and beauty products.

Kate Ansari from Dear Baby brought everything we needed to make a foundation and a lip balm, including  ingredients, utensils and containers.  All we had to do was measure, mix and have fun experimenting with the pigment powders. Kate was there for guidance and to help us out with color matching. All the ladies left with customized products made from safe, natural ingredients like avocado oil, shea butter and aloe vera.

The color palette.

Kate and Dear Baby Products offer make and take events for baby showers, girls night out, team-building events and more. The optimum size for an event is between 10 to 20 people. This keeps the cost agreeable (around $20 per person) and gives everyone enough time and attention to make their products. To schedule your own make and take, go to

The finished products.

You can also buy products from the Dear Baby Product line on the web or at Maryland area Whole Foods stores.

Birthday beauty freebies

July is my birthday month. There is no better way to celebrate your birthday than with some great freebies and discounts from your favorite beauty retailers!  Here are the ones I scored for 2015:

Sephora – Beauty Insiders get a pair of NARS Lip Pencils in Cruella and Rikugien. The deluxe samples aren’t that much smaller than the full size. VIP Beauty Insiders also get a NARS eyeliner. All you have to do is sign up before your birthday month. No purchase required.

Victoria’s Secret: Sign up for emails and get a special coupon for your birthday that entitles you to $10 off a $30 purchase. Get something in the beauty department or load up on cotton panties.

ULTA – ULTA changes the birthday gift every few months or so. This summer I got a  deluxe sample of Urban Decay’s Perversion Mascara.  You have to be an ULTAmate rewards member and you’ll get an email around your birthday that is good for 30 days. Another perk you’ll receive is 2 X points during your birthday month. I got a haircut, bought some hair products and makeup staples and ended up with $8 in rewards – and these are good on all brands and products.

The Body Shop – Members of the Love Your Body program get $10 on their birthday. A membership costs $10 per year, but you also get 10 percent off everyday purchases plus you accumulate points toward reward certificates.

Godiva – This isn’t a beauty product but it is chocolate! Join the rewards program to get a free piece of chocolate each month, rewards for purchases and other exclusive offers. For my birthday I got a $10 ceritficate that I used toward the Birthday Truffle Flight $16-$10= $6.

Makeup storage meets evening bag with the Dollup Case

Dollup Beauty Case, $52
Dollup Beauty Case, $52

This past week I went back to Las Vegas for the annual Cosmoprof Las Vegas convention and here is one of the innovative products I saw on the floor. The Dollup Case is a small clutch that has been fit with a magnetic base designed to hold metal makeup pans. It also has a nice sized mirror and elastic holders for lipstick, liner etc.  There are a variety of makeup brands that are selling their products palette ready (Stila, MUFE, Inglot and Urban Decay) or you can simply pop the pan out of any existing palette.

I just bought a new Naked Basics palette, but I could take the unused pans in the old palette and stick them in the Dollup Case for when I am out on the town or traveling. The Dollup Case is available in six colors and retails for $52. Find them in Von Maur department stores online at
