Turn Your Favorite Shampoo Into Toning Shampoo with OGX

OGX Purple Toning Drops

Keeping blonde hair brass and yellow free is a tireless effort. The easiest way to keep it in shape is by using a toning shampoo or conditioner. There are tons of products on the market these days, but a lot of people complain that toning shampoos can dry out hair and are expensive to boot.

A new product from OGX allows you to tone your hair using your own shampoo and conditioner! OGX Blonde Enhance + Purple Toning Drops (I may get a commission from this link) are concentrated purple drops that you mix into the product to create a custom toning product for hair.

Just dispense your shampoo or conditioner into your hand, add 3 to 5 drops and mix! Use it just with shampoo, just conditioner or both! You can easily customize the level of toning.

I found that the less of the drops you use, the more “blue” your mix will be. That works great for me because I prefer a blue shampoo to purple. If you don’t know what your color is, read my article on finding your undertones. I found this at ULTA Beauty, but you can probably find it wherever OGX products are sold. Priced between $7 and $10, it’s an amazing product!

Review- Not Your Mother’s Triple Threat Brunette Blue Treatment Shampoo

Designed for brunettes, this affordable shampoo is a great toning shampoo for “blue” blondes.

One of the main ways people rejuvenate blonde and highlighted hair is with toning shampoos and conditioners. Most of these shampoos are blue, but not everyone has the same undertones in their hair. There are many people whose hair looks better with a blue-toned shampoo instead. In an earlier post on this site, I tell you how to figure out which one you are.

For me, the gold standard in blue shampoo is Joico’s Color Balance Blue Shampoo. Unfortunately, I have been trouble finding it and it starts at $16.99 a bottle. I saw this shampoo at ULTA and thought I would give it a try.  It comes in an 8-ounce squeeze bottle and costs around $8.49. I have also seen it at Walmart and (I could get a commission from this link) Amazon.

A lot of people complain that color shampoos are drying. I don’t think that Not Your Mother’s Triple Threat Brunette Shampoo is any different. It lathers and washes out just like any regular shampoo. I did not use the conditioner because I always use my regular treatment conditioner. I liked the color it produces and I use it every other day or so when my roots start showing and the blonde starts to fade.

Verdict: I like this just as much as the Joico version and I will continue using it as long as I can find it. At half the price, I might try the conditioner too!

Blue or Purple, which color shampoo is best for your blonde?

Keeping blonde highlights beautiful can be a challenge. Color shampoo can make your highlights looking salon fresh while prolonging trips back to said salon. However, all color shampoos are not created equal. The key is to use the right color to counteract your hair’s undertones.  Most brands only offer purple shampoo, but Joico has both blue and purple.

What color should you use?

First you need to know the undertones of your hair. If you have blonde highlights, you most likely have light to dark brown hair. If your hair has more orange or brassy tones, you will need the blue version. If you have more yellow undertones, you’ll need purple. Purple also works for gray hair and was the reason Clairol invented purple shampoo way back when. If you can’t figure it out, ask your colorist or just experiment.

How to use it

You can buy both the shampoo and conditioner or just the shampoo. You won’t be using this all the time so it will last awhile (I had one bottle for a year). When hair starts to look dull or the difference between your roots and the body bothers you, it’s time to use Color Balance. Put a small amount in your palm and work through hair. Don’t worry if some gets on your shower floor, it will wash off. Let it absorb for a few minutes and then wash and condition.  Use it every few shampoos until you can get back to the salon. You can get Joico Color Balance at ULTA and it qualifies for the coupons too! Sometimes you can find supersize versions on Amazon (affiliate link included).
